Cocktails by Rye and a rare glimpse of the Rawlings Conservatory at night

November 4, 2014 by Amy Langrehr

The first time I walked into the Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park, I was simply amazed. This place is in Baltimore. Seriously. This Thursday, November 6, I cannot wait to see it lit up at night at Cocktails at the Conservatory. Add in cocktails by Rye Fells Point? Done.

This event, a benefit for the Conservatory, is the creation of Doug Atwell of Rye. Doug is one of the most talented and creative bartenders in Baltimore and Rye is a really special place. The cocktail menu reads like a novel - the Jazz Standards is my favorite section (I love a classic, especially Rye’s Pisco Sour.)

This is the second Cocktails at the Conservatory - the first one was in May of this year. The idea for this event came out of the sold-out Amy Stewart Drunken Botanist lecture held last fall at Cylburn Arboretum. I was so bummed to miss that event - I heard nothing but raves.

When I asked why they wanted to organize an event to benefit the Conservatory, Doug replied, “My wife Teri and I just had to lend our support once we finally discovered the Conservatory for ourselves last year. Teri had heard about their giant agave plants blooming, so we made a point to stop in (of course, I love the agave - tequila connection…) As soon as we walked in, we were just blown away…it’s amazing to have this historical building here in Baltimore and still in use, showcasing the natural world to the City.”

Doug will be mixing drinks, along with his Rye bartender Dan Lease, as well as former Rye bartender Anna Wingfield, who is traveling from NYC to take part in the event. The cocktails for this event are new this time around, inspired by what’s currently growing and blooming in the Conservatory. But they’re also bringing back Palm House Punch (from the Drunken Botanist event) by special request. It’s made of New York Distilling Co.’s Dorothy Parker gin, lemon oleo-saccharum, Koval organic jasmine liqueur, white tea, pomegranate grenadine, rosemary syrup, lavender bitters. Wait, what?

Other cocktails will be feature Lyon Distilling white rum, Rise Up Coffee, and Catoctin Creek rye whiskey.

Thursday, November 6
6:30-8:30pm
