BUSBOYS & POETS COMING TO BALTIMORE Iconic DC Restaurant and Bookshop opening in Charles Village The 8th location of Busboys & Poets, which first opened in DC in 2005, will open in Charles Village later on this year. To give you a little more on their mission: “Busboys and Poets is a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted… a place to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul… a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide… we believe that by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world.” The BBJ first reported this news back in January and this is their first location in Baltimore. I’m very excited to have such a successful and dynamic business coming to this prime space. Follow B&P on Instagram to stay in the loop on their opening. CORAZON ICE CREAM now open in Highlandtown The talented and creative team at Cocina Luchadoras — the amazing Mexican restaurant in Fell’s Point — have opened Corazón Helado, which features specialty ice cream, patetas (hi, tequila with salt + lemon!), aguas, churros and more. It’s located at 3222 Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown. Congrats, Rosa! THE FOOD MARKET EXPANDS second location open in Columbia The Food Market has expanded into county territory, opening a new outpost of the popular Hampden restaurant (which opened in 2012) in Columbia just two days ago. Owner Chad Gauss was one of my first consulting clients back in the day and and I’m really happy for him, along with his wife Wendi and the whole Hoopla Hospitality team. This is a big deal! Congrats, all. Tell your friends in HoCo. OUT ON A FRIDAY NIGHT it felt downright decadent A friend and I made very last minute plans to meet up for dinner at Dylan’s Oyster Cellar this past Friday. We ended up just missing the forecasted showers, but it didn’t matter anyway because we were in one of their little shacks outside! We were literally giggling at how much fun it was sitting in there. Dylan’s is one of my favorite places staffed by some of my favorite people. Highly recommend Dylan’s and their shacks — not sure how long they’ll be around. They are seating inside, too, distanced as you’d expect. Even if you don’t eat oysters, or seafood really, go. The kale salad, the bowl ‘o beans and the burger + fries are just a few good reasons, plus very, very nice cocktails, a tight beer and wine list and more. WAVERLY MARKET year-round shopping at its’ best I am a faithful Saturday morning farmers market shopper. Not every single Saturday, but certainly most. I love seeing the vendors, friends and of course, getting local produce, flowers, prepared foods and lots more. I’ve been coming to the 32nd Street Farmers Market (aka Waverly Market) for such a long time and because of it, I shop for what’s in season without even really thinking about it. Right now, I am looking forward to asparagus, strawberries, peas and rhubarb. I love that Waverly is year-round. Big thanks to all of those wonderful vendors. Go shopping next weekend — it’s open every Saturday from 7:00am – 12:00pm. TAKEOUT TUESDAY support The GreenMount School at The Local Fry and MOD Pizza I am so thankful for my job! After four years of consulting, l found my way back to my former life in fundraising. I think non-profit is where I belong, and now to be a part of a wonderful community like the one at The GreenMount School, I’m feeling so lucky. Here’s where you come in… We are doing a series of GreenMount School takeout nights every few months. It started with Chipotle and then we expanded to locally-owned restaurants. I was hesitant to ask restaurant owners to consider giving proceeds back to us in the middle of a global pandemic, but everyone we asked said yes and it turns out it’s pretty much a win-win. The restaurant is busier on a weeknight, our community members can come “together” and we make some money! So far, we’ve had fundraisers with Golden West Cafe, Taharka Brothers and Molina Pizza. Next up: The Local Fry and MOD Pizza at the Rotunda THIS TUESDAY 4/13. Both restaurants will donate 20% to The GreenMount School. Please visit our Facebook event page for more details. Use this link to order from MOD — When ordering online, you must use the code GR184466T for GMS to get 20%. Or, in person, tell the cashier you’re there to support The GreenMount School. Use this link to order from The Local Fry — they only accept orders ONLINE. TRUE CHESAPEAKE OYSTER CO. CHAT WITH CHEF SCANGA Petit Louis chef is about to open The Milton Inn as a full partner You may not know a lot about Chef Chris Scanga, who’s been at the helm at Petit Louis in Roland Park for nearly seven years. But soon, you will. Chef Scanga is partnering with his employers Tony Foreman and Cindy Wolf to open and run the iconic Baltimore County restaurant, The Milton Inn. I spoke with Chris earlier this week about the project and will soon share that interview. Stay tuned! Follow them on Instagram. RESTAURANT MENUS I’ve collected these and the memories that go along with them I’ve been collecting restaurant menus as long as I’ve been writing and learning about food, drinks and hospitality. I finally took some photos (nothing fancy, just one by one with my phone) of some that bring back memories, make me smile, and also of course, some that I am still going to. Many, as you will see are from one-offs, dinner series and collaborations. With COVID, restaurants have struggled to stay afloat. Some have closed, while others have flourished in new forms. Many are reopening as spring rolls in. Thank goodness. I hope you’re able to support some of your favorites very soon. Anyway, here is a link to the album of menus. I hope you enjoy this! |
