Nelson

If you’d like to experience Grand Cru while it’s still under the Carey name, get there before Wednesday, March 4.

After that, the new ownership of J.C. Unitas and Jackie Beal and BSq Wine Co. LLC takes over. I have faith that the new owners know what they’re doing (Jackie’s husband is a key player in the Woodberry Kitchen family) and it’ll be a great place. It simply won’t be the same place.

I like change. But in a situation like this, it’s just sad. Original owner Nelson Carey died suddenly and the folks at Grand Cru are a little family, and they make their guests feel like they’re family, too. Every time I go to Grand Cru, I feel at home. If you were around Baltimore in the late 1990s, Belvedere Square was quite sad…not much open, floundering. I, and many people, credit Nelson as one of the key people who brought it to life. Look at it now – it warms my heart.

Thanks, Nelson. Miss you, hon. And, Christy, thank you for sharing him with us.
